I try to imagine meeting myself coming the other way
2 June 2026
A bit of background, if needed. Passed my test at about 19 to get a cheap form of transport, 69 now. Bikes:- Honda C90, CB200 x 2, CB500T, CB750KZ, CBX750, CBR1000F x3, Thunderace, CBR1000F, 06 Blackbird, 07 Blackbird, 15reg ZZR1400PS, 20reg ZZR1400PS.
Current bikes, the two Blackbirds and the newest ZZR.
I read years ago in Fast or Performance Bikes about covering the clutch and brake levers, all the time, I started riding like that the next day. At 60mph, the second it takes to get your hand off the grip and onto the lever, you've covered 30 yards, if your already covering the lever, your braking 30yds quicker. This has probably saved me a few times.
I watch Twist Of The Wrist II almost every year, I know the storyline's crap but there's always something to learn, counter-steering, road position, suspension. I hold the bars a lot lighter now and I'd like to think my road positioning is better.
I try to imagine meeting myself coming the other way.
On dual or three lane roads I try never to be level with/or in the blind spot of another vehicle, when they look in even the side mirror before changing lanes and can't see you, they will move over. Doesn't always work, Bank Holiday weekend on Edinburgh by-pass a 4WD in lane two indicated and move left, I saw his indicator flash twice as he started to move left, I accelerated forward and left, he saw me and slowed to pull in behind me. Car drivers don't do "lifesaver" looks over the shoulder like bikers do.
